Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve

The Long Forest area, which is mostly surrounded by cleared agricultural and residential land, abuts the edge of the basalt plains and is bounded by the Pyrete Ranges (Wombat State Forest) to the north and the Lerderderg Ranges to the west.

Long Forest, officially named Long Forest Flora & Fauna Reserve, comprises important forest, grassland and riparian ecosystems. The vegetation of the Long Forest is predominantly mallee and box woodland. The areas of mallee and low-growing box in the Long Forest are also known as Rocky Chenopod Open‑scrub.

While much of the area is protected within the scattered blocks of the Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve, valuable habitat remains on private land surrounding the Reserve, and on other public land including roadsides, streamside reserves and on land managed for water supply. The Reserve is managed by Parks Victoria.
